Indonesia and the United Kingdom Agree on a New Strategic Partnership that is Highly Beneficial to Both Countries

Jakarta, InfoPublik – The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, together with the Prime Minister (PM) of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, officially agreed on a new strategic partnership between the Republic of Indonesia and the United Kingdom.  The agreement was announced in a joint press statement at Lancaster House, London, United Kingdom, on Tuesday (20/1/2026).

President Prabowo stated that the United Kingdom is an important partner for Indonesia, particularly due to the country's strength in technology and finance.  ‘We view the United Kingdom as a partner that can participate significantly in our economy. They have very strong technology and financial strength, and are interested in investing in Indonesia,’ said the President.

According to the President, this strategic partnership opens up great opportunities for Indonesia to benefit from technology transfer and financial support to accelerate national development. ‘I think this partnership will be very beneficial for both parties,’ he added.

In strategic cooperation in the maritime sector, President Prabowo said that the UK would support Indonesia's plan to build around 1,500 fishing vessels and to repair and develop fishing villages. This effort is aimed at improving the welfare of fishermen while also improving the level of protein consumption among the population. ‘This is very strategic for us. It will accelerate economic growth and progress, especially in the maritime sector. Three-quarters of Indonesia's territory is sea, while the protein consumption of our population is still relatively low. We want to improve this situation,’ said the President of the Republic of Indonesia.

This new strategic partnership is a follow-up to the Joint Statement on a New Strategic Partnership between the Republic of Indonesia and the United Kingdom, which was agreed upon by both countries in 2024. The agreement reflects the strong commitment of the Republic of Indonesia and the United Kingdom to deepen their existing bilateral relations.

Within the framework of this new strategic partnership, cooperation between the two countries will be based on four main pillars, namely:

1. Strengthening economic growth.

2. Cooperation in the fields of climate, energy and nature conservation.

3. Enhancing defence and security.

4. Human and community development.

Through these four pillars, Indonesia and the United Kingdom are committed to building an inclusive, sustainable, and strategic partnership, while strengthening the position of both countries as key partners in the region and at the global level.  (InfoPublik/BPMI Setpres)
