‘BUMI’ Art Exhibition in Surabaya: Ecological Criticism Without Clichéd Slogans

SURABAYA, Indonesia Herald – The Surabaya Arts Council Gallery (DKS) once again became a space for artistic dialogue through an exhibition entitled ‘BUMI: Integrality of Body–Sensation’. Officially opened on 1 December 2025 by artist Syaiful Mudjib, the exhibition ran for a week until 7 December 2025.

Unlike typical environmental campaigns, this exhibition does away with posters or clichéd slogans. The exhibition curator, Hari Prajitno M.Sn, emphasises the concept that the human body and the earth have an inseparable material connection.

‘The body and the earth are not two separate things. We come from the earth, and one day we will return to the earth,’ said Hari.

More than 35 artists and various art communities—such as BAKAR, FAMILY MERDEKA, and BOMBTRACK—are participating. The works on display are diverse, ranging from visual installations of cracked soil, paintings, sound archives, to performance art.

In addition to the exhibition, the agenda also included a screening of a documentary film by Daniel Rudi Haryanto that captured environmental damage, art discussions, and social activities such as tree planting and carving workshops in the Gang Dolly area.

The opening night was enlivened by performances from Pandai Api, Magixridim, Arul Lamandau, and others, hosted by Deni Indrayanti and Caulis Itong. The exhibition is open to the public at the DKS Gallery, Jl. Gubernur Suryo No.15, Surabaya.
