Indonesia Builds the Best Sports Training Centre in Southeast Asia

Jakarta, InfoPublik — The Indonesian government is preparing to build the largest modern athlete training centre in Southeast Asia as a strategic step towards realising President Prabowo Subianto's vision of making Indonesia more sovereign in the international sports arena.

The programme was confirmed by the Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora) Erick Thohir, who assured that the Ministry of Youth and Sports is ready to accelerate the construction of these integrated training facilities.

The construction of this sports science complex is one of the national priority programmes that will serve as a long-term training centre and a base for developing elite athletes. This step is in line with President Prabowo's fourth Asta Cita regarding the strengthening of superior human resources in the field of sports.

‘I and, of course, all Indonesians would like to thank the President for paying special attention to the field of sports by including the construction of an athlete training complex in the government's strategic programme,’ said Erick Thohir in his statement on Sunday (23/11/2025).

According to Erick, the President's commitment shows that the government is serious about making Indonesia a new force in world sports. ‘The plan is for this training centre to be the best in Southeast Asia,’ he said.

Erick explained that the President's attention motivates the entire national sports ecosystem to work in a more focused and consistent manner. From federations, coaches, sports science personnel, to athletes, all are encouraged to improve the quality of training and performance.

‘The President's attention and commitment further motivate all stakeholders in competitive sports to give their best for the Red and White,’ he said.

He added that every athlete who competes in international championships represents the nation and therefore requires facilities, support, and preparation that meet global standards.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports will also collaborate with various ministries and institutions to accelerate the construction of this national training centre. ‘The most important thing is that we must unite to plan and realise this. Tiered and long-term coaching must be carried out consistently in order to achieve success,’ said Erick.

In his report to the President, Erick also announced the designation of 17 leading sports as the focus of medium and long-term coaching towards the 2028 Olympics. This determination is based on an in-depth analysis of medal opportunities, track records, the readiness of the national development ecosystem, and long-term prospects.

Some of these priority sports include athletics, gymnastics, swimming, badminton, weightlifting, rock climbing, archery (and a number of other priority sports based on performance reviews).

The development programme towards the Olympics is also aligned with the targets for the 2026 Asian Games and 2027 SEA Games.

In addition to determining priority sports, the Ministry of Youth and Sports is developing a promotion-relegation mechanism between sports as part of transparent and results-oriented development governance. This mechanism encourages each federation to compete positively and maintain high development standards.
