Speaker of the House: Indonesia's Stance Remains in Support of Palestine

Jakarta - Speaker of the House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, responded to the discourse on the relocation of Gazans to Indonesia proposed by the administration of US President Donald Trump.

According to Puan, the issue will be discussed in Commission I of the House of Representatives to determine the further stance of the government and the House of Representatives.

The issue arose from an NBC News report that quoted US presidential envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff. The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied the news and emphasised that there is no clear information about the plan to relocate 2 million Gazans to Indonesia.

Puan Maharani emphasised that despite the relocation issue, Indonesia's stance remains supportive of the Palestinian Authority.

‘Maybe we will discuss it in Commission I, and what is the attitude of the Government, (and) the House of Representatives,’ Puan explained to the media crew at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Monday (21/1/2025).

The issue of the relocation of 2 million Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip to Indonesia originated from an NBC News report. The US media reported that President Donald Trump plans to relocate 2 million Gazans to Indonesia, citing a statement from the president's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied the statement that there will be a relocation of 2 million Gazans to Indonesia after Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the government avoids speculating on the issue of 2 million Gazans being relocated to Indonesia in the absence of clearer information.

Regardless of the issue of the relocation of Gazans, Puan emphasised that Indonesia's stance remains the same. ‘Indonesia's stance continues to support the Palestinian Government,’ Puan concluded.
