Nickel and Tin Commodity Downstreamisation Increasingly Integrated with Simbara

Jakarta - Mining companies are required to continue to innovate to improve efficiency and transparency in natural resource management. This is because this sector has a strategic role in the national economy.

This was conveyed by the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment of the Republic of Indonesia, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, after the launching and socialisation of the implementation of Nickel and Tin commodities through the Mineral and Coal Information System (Simbara), Monday, (22/7/2024) in Jakarta.

The launch of Simbara, Luhut said, was a momentum to manage mineral commodities, especially nickel and tin, which are integrated from upstream to downstream with several Ministries in one portal.

Luhut said that nickel commodities with downstreaming and increasing investment in the mining industry and nickel processing/refining will make the business process in the field more complex.

As for tin commodities, the problems that occur are not only related to illegal mining practices, but even legal business processes still have many issues, which indicate various weaknesses in governance that need to be improved.

‘In 2022, mineral and coal PNBP will reach 183.5 trillion and in 2023 172.9 trillion, showing how much the mineral and coal sector contributes to state revenue. It is important to maintain its governance,’ he said.

Simbara is designed as a digital platform that can facilitate data management, monitoring and reporting more effectively and accurately. The application can also be used as a commodity movement monitoring tool aimed at reducing natural resource leakage, and is able to optimise state revenue.

The system will still be developed to ensure business actors' compliance with the provisions of forestry and environmental aspects as well as labour.

‘The development of Simbara has also identified loopholes prone to corruption and at the same time closed them with various more effective digital systems and mechanisms. Hopefully, our joint efforts will provide optimal benefits for mineral commodity management as a national strategic commodity,’ Luhut concluded. (InfoPublik.id)
