Indonesia Towards Sustainable Energy Era with Focus on Battery Technology

Jakarta - The innovations, explorations and collaborations that Indonesia is building emphasize an important step in determining a more sustainable energy future for future generations.

"Indonesia is entering a new era of technological advancement and environmental responsibility. The role of batteries is becoming increasingly important," said Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan at the International Battery Summit 2024 themed "The Future Battery Technology from Upstream to Downstream for Accelerating Clean Energy Transition" on Monday (29/7/2024).

Batteries, Luhut continued, are at the core of the green revolution, serving as a critical component to power everything from cellphones and electric vehicles to renewable energy systems.

To date, the implementation of downstream policies has contributed significantly to the Indonesian economy by increasing the value of exports, contributing to Gross Domestic Product (GDP), improving the trade balance, developing new growth centers outside Java for equitable development, and much more.

Indonesia is also working to transform into a major global economic power, driven by a large domestic market and rich natural resources that are important for the energy transition.

"The government is also focusing on economic transformation through green industrialization by downstreaming natural resources and producing green products," he continued.

With a dominant market share in the production of nickel and other significant key mineral resources, it is imperative for Indonesia to establish a strong presence in the battery industry.

"This will strengthen our key initiatives in nickel downstreaming, investment in solar Photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing, and Electric Vehicle (EV) manufacturing through our EV investment program. Indonesia now wants to be a leader in this field, so we start from upstream to downstream," he concluded.
