Donggala- The typical weaving of Donggala Regency, Central Sulawesi, is one step away from being recognized as a Geographical Indication (IG) from the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham).
This was conveyed by the Head of the Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of Central Sulawesi, Hermansyah Siregar, during a visit to Donggala Regency, Wednesday (3/27/2024).
"Currently, the application for registration of the Donggala weaving IG has entered the substantive examination stage by the Directorate General of Intellectual Property of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights," said Hermansyah.
The Regional Head of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of Central Sulawesi explained that the IG is a sign that shows the area of origin of an item and/or product that because of its quality and /or good reputation has been known and recognized by the public.
"The registration of the IG of Donggala weaving aims to protect intellectual property rights over typical woven products of Donggala Regency, as well as increase the economic value and competitiveness of these products in the market," he explained.
Furthermore, he revealed that his party was optimistic that the application for the IG of Donggala weaving would be immediately approved by the DJKI Kemenkumham.
"Currently it is in the process of perfecting the document in the form of a description of the weaving, we are optimistic that the IG of Donggala weaving will soon be registered, this is our asset that we must protect together," he said.
In the process, together with the DJKI Geographical Indication examination team led by Idris as a young Intellectual Property (IP) policy analyst, the Central Sulawesi Ministry of Law and Human Rights IP application analyst team intensively provided assistance to refine the description of Donggala weaving carried out by the Donggala Regency Industry and Trade Office (Disperindag) and the weaving craftsmen group.
"There are four sub-districts that are producers of Donggala weaving, namely Banawa, Central Banawa, Tanantovea and Labuuan sub-districts, the craftsmen are also quite a lot of up to dozens of people," explained Inggrid, from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of Central Sulawesi IP application analyst team.
It is hoped that the registration of Donggala weaving as IG, can provide benefits for weaving craftsmen in Donggala Regency, among others, increase the economic value and competitiveness of Donggala weaving in the market, protect weaving from imitators and counterfeiting, to be able to improve the welfare of craftsmen.
"This year, we proclaimed that 2024 as the year of Geographical Indications, we echoed many breakthroughs so that our regions can rise with their respective characteristics, we continue to strive so that in Central Sulawesi there can be more Geographical Indications," said Idris.
The IP application analyst team of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of Central Sulawesi has previously successfully registered the Marmorata Sidat Fish typical of Poso Regency and Nambo Weaving typical of Banggai Regency as a Geographical Indication.
In addition, the Ministry of Law and Human Rights of Central Sulawesi has also inventoried various other potentials, such as Clove typical of Toli-Toli Regency, Kamba Rice of Poso Regency, Fried Onions of Palu City to Tumundo Sweet Potatoes of Banggai Laut Regency.
"We strive this year to continue to protect our intellectual property, of course, full support is needed by various parties, especially the local government, especially at this time, we are also hosting the National Movement for Proud to be Made in Indonesia and Proud to Travel in Indonesia, hopefully achieving our targets," concluded Hermansyah.
