Jakarta - Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman optimistically conveyed efforts and solutions to overcome the decline in agricultural production in recent years.
In a joint Working Meeting with Committee II DPD RI at the Parliament Building Jakarta, Tuesday (2/4/2024), Minister of Agriculture explained the three main problems that have been identified and quick steps that have been taken.
The first problem faced was the decrease in fertilizer quota from 9.5 to 4.5 million tons, which was followed by the elimination of other fertilizer compositions such as ZA and TSP. However, the Minister of Agriculture expressed success in restoring the fertilizer allocation to 9.5 million tons, which has been distributed throughout Indonesia.
Regarding the policy of collecting fertilizers with a farmer card that caused obstacles for farmers, the Minister stated that regulations have been simplified so that farmers can now collect fertilizers with just an ID card, accelerating agricultural production.
In addition, the third issue highlighted was the use of old Agricultural Machinery Equipment (Alsintan). Despite this, mechanization efforts have proven to be able to reduce costs by up to 60 percent. Mentan also highlighted the long period of bad weather, such as el nino, which had an impact on crop damage.
He asserted that the government has taken swift measures, such as pumping for dry rice fields, to address the problem. He also stressed the importance of maintaining food stability, stating that food is an issue that should not be politicized because it concerns the life of the nation.
He hoped for support from Committee II DPD RI in the government's efforts to achieve food self-sufficiency. The support is considered important considering the role of DPD in communicating with farmers.
"DPD's support is vital for the government's efforts to achieve food self-sufficiency. I hope Committee II DPD RI can support these steps for the sustainability of Indonesian agriculture," he said hopefully.
